Golf Improves to 5th at Schenkel Invitational

STATESBORO, Ga. – The No. 15 North Florida men's golf team improved three shots and moved into a tie for fifth place after second round action Saturday in the Schenkel Invitational.
The Ospreys climbed two spots after shooting a 291 for a two-day total of 585. Senior Kevin Phelan led the charge for UNF shooting a team best even-par 72 on the day.
Sophomore MJ Maguire carded a 73 (+1) on Saturday and remains the team's top performer sitting tied for 10th at 143. Senior Sean Dale joins him in the Top 20, ranking 17th at 144 after a second round 73 (+1). Phelan is currently tied for 26th at 147.
Freshman Joe Stepnes, who improved five strokes, also fired a one-over 73 and is tied for 55th at 151. Sophomore Joey Petronio rounds out the Osprey lineup at 161 (82nd).
“We had a solid round today,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “We got off to a rough start but finished well. We have just made too many small mistakes to be competitive with the leaders. We are looking for a good finish tomorrow.”
No. 2 ranked Alabama moved to the top of the team leaderboard with a two-day tally of 563 followed by day one leader, No. 4 Texas at 565. No. 11 Florida is third at 581 followed by Maryland (584), UNF and No. 46 UCF (585), No. 38 Vanderbilt (587), No. 33 North Texas (590), Ole Miss (590), Kentucky (592), Georgia Southern (593), UAB (595), Virginia (596), College of Charleston (598) and Notre Dame (604).
Bama's Justin Thomas continues to pace the medalist competition with a 36-hole total of 137 (-7).
Tournament play at the Schenkel concludes with a final round Sunday. North Florida, who will be paired with Maryland and UCF, begins play at 9:15 a.m. off of tee No. 1. Live scoring results are available at GolfStat.com.
