JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball dropped both of its games to FIU by 6-3 scores on Wednesday at the UNF Softball Complex.
In the first game, the Ospreys jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Ashley Holton sent a one-out single to left field that drove in Kelly Wilson from second. On the same play, smart base-running allowed Holton to sneak to third among some confusion by FIU. Holton later scored on a Marissa Thomas hit to make it a 2-0 game. Meanwhile, with two outs and the bases loaded, a wild pitch brough home Thomas and the Ospreys held a three-run advantage.
However, the Panthers tacked on two runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Jessy Alfonso had a two-RBI double that cut UNF's lead down to 3-2 in the fourth. FIU took the lead in the fifth behind a two-run triple from Rachel Slowik. In the sixth, the Panthers' runs came on a RBI double by Brie Rojas and a RBI single from Kayla Burri to make it a 6-3 game.
Kaylie Wallace had the loss after allowing four runs off eight hits in 4.2 innings. She also struck out three.
Corrine Jenkins received the win. In 7.0 innings, she allowed three runs off six hits and fanned four batters.
Six Ospreys each registered a hit, while Nicole Rascon was 3-for-4 with two runs for FIU
In Game Two, it was FIU this time that took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Panthers capitalized on two UNF errors that loaded up the bases with one out. Alfonso scored on a walk, while a Krystal Garcia fielder's choice with the bases loaded brought home Rojas. A wild pitch then allowed Burri get home and put the Panthers up 3-0.
FIU added to its lead in the top of the fourth. With two outs and runners on the corners, Bre Kaye's hit to left center drove in Garcia and made it a 4-0 game.
UNF responded in the bottom half of the inning with Holton scoring on a Danica Mandarano hit through the right side as FIU held a 4-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, Kaye sent a two-run single through the left side and FIU went up 6-1. However, UNF cut it down to a three-run game in the bottom of the sixth. Jackie Reese sent a deep sac fly with the bases loaded that brought in Holton. An Abby Tewey hit through the left side drove in Stephanie McAdam from second to cut FIU's lead down to three, but that was as close as UNF could get.
Cortney Radke was credited with the loss after pitching the full 7.0 innings. Radke allowed three earned runs off seven hits and struck out three.
Shelby Graves had the win after going 6.0 innings and allowing three runs off six hits and striking out five. Shelby Wagnon was credited with the save, coming in for the final 1.0 inning and striking out two and not allowing a hit.
