JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida track and field team grabbed five gold medals and broke six school records as it wrapped up competition on the second and final day of the 2013 Atlantic Sun Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday.
“I'm very proud of the way we competed today,” Head Coach Jeff Pigg said. “We had a lot of people step up and perform as well or better than we hoped for.”
The men broke a trio of school records in their second day of competition. Sophomore Jake Menan broke his own record in the 400m en route to a third-place finish, clocking a 48.78. Seniors Aaron Tillman (49.08) and Justin Mims (49.51) also scored in the event, recording personal bests to finish fifth and sixth, respectively.
Junior Dante Bouldin also broke his own school record, this time in the 60m hurdles, as he took home the gold with a time of 8.20.
Senior Cameron Dickerson led a trio of scoring Ospreys in the mile, taking first with a time of 4:17.78, while senior James Post (4:18.84) and freshman Gary Salomon (4:25.99) finished fifth and eighth, respectively. Sophomore Taylor Sumagpang earned a bronze of his own, clocking a 1:53.03 in the 800m, a time which would have broken the previous meet record in the event.
The 4x400m relay team broke the night's final school record, as Tillman, Sumagpang, Menan and Mims finished second with a time of 3:17.66. The team broke the previous school record by almost a full second.
The men grabbed their highest team finish in program history, tallying 86 points to take third place, eight points clear of fourth-place USC Upstate. Kennesaw State was the highest-scoring team with 228.5 points.
On the women's side, junior Brianna Frazier took home gold medals in the 200m (23.94) and 400m (54.39) for the third consecutive year, finishing second in the race for Most Outstanding Performer. Her time in the 200m was also a new UNF record.
Freshman Lindsey Enders made it a clean sweep in pole vault for the Ospreys, taking first place with a vault of 3.82m (12-6 1/4), a height that broke both the A-Sun Championships record and the UNF school record, which Enders had broken once already this year.
Enders led a pack of Ospreys that earned a slew of points in the pole vault. Junior Caleigh Kelsay took the bronze medal with a vault of 3.52m (11-6 1/2), while sophomores Brittany Wagoner (3.37m) and Chelsea Chandler (3.22m) finished fourth and seventh, respectively.
Junior Shelby Kittrell continued her solid weekend, earning runner-up honors in the 5000m with a time of 17:22.95, while freshman Christina Johnson broke her own school record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.81, good for third place.
As a team, the women scored 106.5 points to finish fourth, just 13.5 points behind third-place Kennesaw State. Jacksonville took home the team championship with a score of 173.
“I think this was a great meet for us and for the UNF program,” Pigg said. “We had some goals for our program coming into the meet that we thought would stretch us a little bit, and we accomplished those with a great team effort.”
Complete results for the entire meet, as well as all results by UNF competitors, can be found on the attached PDFs.
The Ospreys will next be in action when they open the outdoor portion of their 2013 season in the friendly confines of Hodges Stadium. UNF will host the UNF Spring Break Invite on campus next weekend, March 1-2.
