JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's tennis team won three singles matches and a doubles match, but fell to Barry at home on Sunday afternoon, 4-3.
"Today was tough all around," Head Coach Audra Cohen said. "We didn't play to our level in doubles or singles, and I felt like we didn't have the heart we normally have deep in our matches."
UNF started the day well, as junior
Simona Weymar and freshman
Mariella Calderon opened the match with an 8-4 win over Akemi Maehama and Karina Goia at No. 3 doubles, but Barry captured wins in the other two doubles matches to secure the doubles point.
Following the retirement of Barry's No. 6 player to begin singles play, the match was even at 1-1. The Buccaneers also grabbed a win at No. 5 before senior
Lorena Aviles put forth a dominant performance to earn a victory at No. 1, as she took down Elisabeth Abanda, 6-1, 6-1, to level the match for a second time at 2-2.
After Barry won at No. 2 and No. 3 to clinch the match, senior
Melanie Aguirre ended the day on a positive note, battling to a straight-set victory over Maehama at No. 4, 6-4, 6-4.
"On a positive note, Melanie and Lorena played great singles matches and got the job done. I'm especially happy with Melanie, who did a great job after a bad day on Friday against Houston," Cohen said. "The timing of this is good, as we're heading into a long weekend against three very quality opponents. Hopefully we can use this as the kick in the butt we needed."
The Ospreys will be back in action at home on Friday, February 22, when they play host to South Carolina State in an 11 a.m. match. Admission to all home matches is free.
