CLEMSON, S.C. – University of North Florida women's basketball faces its second Atlantic Coast Conference opponent of the season on Sunday, Dec. 1 when the Ospreys take on Clemson in a 2 p.m., game at Littlejohn Coliseum. It is the first meeting between UNF and Clemson.
Â
"We're just really excited about the opportunity to compete against an ACC team," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "We're using our nonconference schedule as a way to prepare for conference. Clemson presents a different challenge from all the other teams we've played. We just need to stay focused on us and execute our game plan."
Â
UNF has three ACC teams on its 2013-14 schedule and has already played Miami on Nov. 8. The Ospreys also face Florida State on Dec. 16. Facing the ACC has not played into the Ospreys' favor, who are 0-10 against current ACC teams. However, UNF comes off its highest-scoring month of November in its nine-year Division I history. Through the first six games of 2013-14, UNF's averaged 59.7 points per game.
Â
Eight days will have passed since UNF was last in action. The Ospreys come off a heart-breaking 61-60 loss to Siena in the consolation game of the TD Bank Classic in Burlington, Vt., on Nov. 23. Destinee Smith was tabbed All-Tournament after averaging 13.0 points and 3.5 assists per game. Smith has a team-best 13.2 point-per-game average and has scored in double-figures in each of UNF's six games this season.
Â
Clemson has been on its home court for much of the 2013-14 season thus far. Including Sunday's game, six of the Tigers' seven games will have taken place at Littlejohn Coliseum. Clemson's only away game was at USF on Nov. 24. The Tigers have won their last two games, including a 41-39 victory over Radford last Wednesday. Quinyotta Pettaway has averaged a team-best 13.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game in two appearances this season. Meanwhile, Nikki Dixon's averaging 9.2 points per game and is shooting 82.6 percent (19-for-23) from the free throw line.
