JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – University of North Florida volleyball dropped a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-18) match at Atlantic Sun leader ETSU on Friday evening at the Brooks Gym.
Â
The loss eliminates UNF from postseason contention, while the win allowed ETSU to clinch a share of the Atlantic Sun Regular Season Championship.
Â
UNF had a tough time generating a consistent offense, with Morgan Van Alstine leading the Ospreys with seven kills. Abby Fesl led UNF with 21 assists and nine digs.
Â
Megan Devine posted a 13-kill, 10-dig double-double, while Meredith Hardy notched 17 kills and eight blocks. Jamie Rutledge added 30 assists and Renzey Rice made 11 digs.
Â
UNF battled with ETSU throughout the first set until the Bucs had a late run to pull away. With UNF down by two, a Khadijah Wiley kill sparked a three-point run that allowed ETSU to go up 21-16. The Ospreys attempted to chip away at ETSU's lead and came to within three, using an ETSU attack error to make it 23-20. However, that was the closest UNF could get as ETSU registered back-to-back kills to win the set.
Â
A strong start to the second set allowed UNF to go up 13-7 on an ETSU attack error. However, ETSU responded with an eight-point run to take a 15-13 lead. UNF battled back and forced a tie at 17-17 on a Cameron McGuire-Erin Edwards block. UNF and ETSU continued to battle over the set's next few points, but the Bucs took a three-point, 22-19 advantage on a Hardy-Kristen Favre block. A kill from Saelina Dunn sparked a critical three-point Osprey run that allowed UNF to tie the set at 22-22 on an Edwards solo block. ETSU took advantage of two Osprey miscues and a kill from Hardy in order to win the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Â
Facing a two-point deficit in the third set, a kill from Van Alstine sparked a four-point UNF run that put the Ospreys up 13-11. ETSU answered with a 5-1 spurt of its own in order to go up 16-14 on a Rutledge-Jessica Schafer block. Although UNF fought back to even the set at 18-18 on a block by Van Alstine and Kelly Koop, ETSU used a kill from Schafer on the next point to start a match-ending seven-point run.j
