JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida volleyball travels just a few miles up the road on Friday night when the Ospreys visit cross-town rival Jacksonville for the SunTrust River City Rumble and a key Atlantic Sun contest. Match time is set for 7 p.m., at Swisher Gymnasium.
Â
"Our matches with JU are always fun and exciting," said head coach Steve Loeswick. "I don't think this one will be any different. JU has a very good team and our team is excited for the challenge and another opportunity to get a barrel point."
Â
UNF picked up a crucial Atlantic Sun victory earlier this week with a 3-2 win over Florida Gulf Coast Monday night at UNF Arena. Down 2-1 in the match, the Ospreys came back to take the fourth and fifth sets in order to get their first five-set victory of the 2013 season. The win over Florida Gulf Coast moved the Ospreys to one win back from sixth-place Kennesaw State. The top six teams advance to the Atlantic Sun Tournament.
Â
Meanwhile, Jacksonville can clinch a spot in the A-Sun Tournament on Friday night with a win. The Dolphins are tied for second with Lipscomb with 10-2 records. Jacksonville had a 10-match winning streak come to an end last Saturday at Lipscomb after a five-set loss. However, the Dolphins posted a 3-0 sweep over Savannah State on Wednesday night. Jacksonville leads the Atlantic Sun in lowest opponent hitting percentage (.179) and service aces (1.74). Sammie Strausbaugh, Kendall Courtney and Taylor Nyquist hold the top three individual marks for service aces in the A-Sun. Stausbaugh leads the Dolphins in kills (274; 3.22 per set) and Courtney averages 10.19 assists per set.
Â
UNF leads the all-time series 14-10, but Jacksonville won the last meeting. The Dolphins posted a 3-1 win over the Ospreys on Oct. 11, 2013 in front of a UNF Arena volleyball record crowd of 1,321. Jacksonville also holds a 2-0 lead in this year's SunTrust River City Rumble standings.
