Â
MACON, Ga. – University of North Florida volleyball is back on the road this weekend, traveling to Mercer and Kennesaw State for a pair of Atlantic Sun matches. The Ospreys play at Mercer at 7 p.m., on Friday night and then face Kennesaw State at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
Â
"This is a great weekend to test ourselves on the road," said head coach Steve Loeswick. "Both Mercer and Kennesaw State are great defensive teams and have tough gyms to play in. These are two more critical Atlantic Sun matches, but we've had a great week of practice to prepare us for the weekend."
Â
UNF comes off a 1-1 performance at home last weekend. The Ospreys picked up their first A-Sun win of the season with a 3-0 sweep of Northern Kentucky last Friday, but fell 3-0 to conference powerhouse Lipscomb in a match that saw three extremely close sets. Against Northern Kentucky, UNF hit a season-best .371 and saw four players with double-digit attempts hit over .300 in that match alone. Meanwhile, for the weekend, Cameron McGuire hit .400-or-better in both of the Ospreys' matches, going .400 against Northern Kentucky and then .412 against Lipscomb.
Â
Mercer searches for its first A-Sun win and end a 12-match losing skid. The Bears have not won since defeating Jacksonville State 3-1 on Aug. 30 at the UAB Invitational. Most of Mercer's matches have been in either three or four sets as the Bears have only gone to five sets once thus far. The Bears average a conference-best 15.50 digs per set. Libero Emily Rochefort has an A-Sun leading 4.74 dig-per-set average that ranks 50th in the latest NCAA statistics that were released on Monday.
Â
UNF leads the all-time series 10-7 and won the last meeting 3-0 on Oct. 27, 2012 in Macon.
Â
Kennesaw State enters the weekend with a 5-1 record on its home court this weekend. All five of those wins came during the Owls' Sept. 13-20 winning streak, which included a 3-0 sweep of USC Upstate. However, the Owls have dropped their last three matches, falling 3-1 to ETSU at home and dropping four-set matches at Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast last weekend. Kennesaw State is averaging 13.91 digs per set on the season, but has an impressive 16.53 dig-per-set average in conference matches. Camille Pedraza is second in the A-Sun overall in digs (4.31 per set). However, when it comes to conference-only matches, Pedraza leads the A-Sun with a 4.93 dig-per-set average.
Â
Kennesaw State leads the all-time series 6-4, but UNF won the last match between the two teams. The Ospreys posted a 3-0 victory on Oct. 26, 2012, which started UNF's Division I record eight-match winning streak.
