JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's tennis team romped over Bethune-Cookman, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon in the first-ever match at the newly-renovated UNF Tennis Complex.
The Ospreys captured all seven points thanks to a doubles effort in which they did not lose more than three games in a match, as well as a single performance that saw all six competitors win in straight sets.
"This match was a great first step in our journey this season," Head Coach Audra Cohen said. "I'm very happy with the way the girls took care of business and handled their nerves in the home opener."
Senior
Lorena Aviles led the way with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Chinatsu Kajwara at #1 singles, while junior
Simona Weymar rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at #2, downing Shereen Peterson-Paul. Sophomore
Marina Cunningham only dropped one game as well, besting Maria Dimitrova 6-1, 6-0 at #3.
Sophomore
Taylor Hollander earned the first dual victory of her UNF career as she downed Gaby Chinchilla at #4, 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore
Rebeca Pereira (6-0, 6-1) and senior
Melanie Aguirre (6-1, 6-0) both steamrolled to easy victories at #5 and #6, respectively.
At #1 doubles, Aviles and Aguirre were never threatened, cruising to an 8-1 victory over Kajiwara and Chinchilla, while Hollander and Pereira rolled to an 8-2 win at #2 doubles. Weymar and Calderon completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win at #3.
"I'm really proud of how everyone performed today, especially Taylor and Mariella, who were competing in their first dual matches," Cohen said. "This team has a great sense of the big picture, and we're going to use each step as an opportunity to get better and move closer to where we want to go."
The Ospreys are next in action on February 2, when they travel south for a match at Miami, who was tied for ninth in this week's ITA National Rankings.
