JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The University of North Florida women's golf team carded an opening round 303 Saturday at the Eat-A-Peach Collegiate. The score marked the first collegiate round in program history.
Featuring a line-up consisting of four true freshmen and a junior, the Ospreys finished day one play in third place and just eight shots behind first round leader Mercer. Tess Huber fired an even par 72 in her collegiate tournament debut to lead UNF.
Huber is tied for second in the medalist competition with freshman teammate Mary Rodgers just one shot behind at 73 (T-5). Freshman Kelly Aylwin and junior Kelly Miller are tied for 16th following rounds of 79 while Julia McQuilken rounds out the Osprey lineup in 23rd after posting an 81.
Mercer, the tournament host, leads the five-team field after shooting an opening round 295. Charleston Southern is second at 298 followed by North Florida, Stetson (305) and Seminole State (316).
The Bears' Mary Alice Murphy, the lone player with a score under-par, owns a slim one-shot advantage in medalist play.
Tournament action at the Eat-A-Peach continues with second round action Sunday at the par 72, 6,082-yard Pine Lakes Golf Club, the course which will also host the 2013 Atlantic Sun Championship in April.
