CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of North Florida volleyball team competed with the Slovenian Junior National Team on Saturday in a friendly international exhibition as both teams closed out the Courtyard Charleston North Classic. Slovenia came back to win the match 3-2.
Anna Budinska posted a 17-kill, 11-dig double-double to lead the Osprey offense. Madison Hatcher and Cameron McGuire also added 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Casey Giovanazzi put up 37 assists and Nicole Baran added 23 digs.
Iza Miakar led Slovenia with 16 kills.
“It was an experience for our players and a way to prepare for the rest of our season,” said head coach Steve Loeswick, “We still have a lot of volleyball to play.”
UNF took the first set 25-20, but Slovenia evened the match at 1-1 after winning the second set 25-21. Trailing by four in the third set, a kill by Hatcher sparked a six-point run that lifted UNF to a 25-23 win. However, Slovenia captured the fourth set 25-17 and then won the deciding fifth set 15-8.
Following the match, Carolyn Jenkins was named to the All-Tournament Team. She led the Ospreys in kills against both College of Charleston and Memphis, notching 19 and 16 kills, respectively.
The Ospreys return to action next weekend with their home-opening Radisson/North Florida Invitational. UNF hosts Florida A&M (Friday, 7 p.m.), Presbyterian (Saturday, Noon) and Davidson (Saturday, 7 p.m.) at UNF Arena during the tournament. For ticket information, click here.
