JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After two weekends on the road, the University of North Florida volleyball team makes its 2012 home debut with this weekend's Radisson/North Florida Invitational. The Ospreys welcome Florida A&M, Presbyterian and Davidson to UNF Arena for the tournament.
“Our team has been training hard and is very excited to play at home this weekend,” said head coach Steve Loeswick. “It should be a great weekend with some excellent competition! Our goal this season is to improve each time we step on the floor. This weekend will be a great opportunity to continue our growth as a team and in front of our home crowd.”
The tournament includes three sessions with two matches in each of those sessions. The Radisson/North Florida Invitational kicks off on Friday with Presbyterian and Davidson at 4:30 p.m, and then UNF and Florida A&M at 7 p.m. Play continues on Saturday's second session that includes the Florida A&M-Davidson match at 10 a.m. ,and UNF-Presbyterian at Noon. The tournament concludes with the third session of Florida A&M-Presbyterian at 5 p.m., and UNF-Davidson at 7 p.m.
UNF comes off three tightly contested matches at last weekend's Courtyard Charleston North Classic, which included NCAA matches against College of Charleston and Memphis and an exhibition against the Slovenian Junior National Team. In UNF's eight NCAA sets last weekend, six of them were won by the minimum two points.
Multiple career nights and key performances propelled the Ospreys to a 3-2 tournament-opening win over host College of Charleston. Seniors Nicole Baran (digs), Carolyn Jenkins (kills and total attempts) and Maria Pantovic (kills and total attempts), junior Britt Claessens (assists) and Cari Whitmire (digs) all either tied or reached UNF career benchmarks. Jenkins, who had a match-best can career-high tying 19 kills against the Cougars, then followed that match up with 16 kills in the Ospreys' loss to Memphis en route to earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Florida A&M are in search of its first win of the season after starting out 0-6. The Lady Rattlers have played in the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational in Gainesville and then hosted three matches at last weekend's FSU Invitational in Tallahassee. In its most recent tournament, Florida A&M was swept in its matches against Georgia, FIU and then-No. 8 Florida State. Yeisha Huanec and Maria Ceccarelli lead the team with 59 and 54 kills, respectively, while libero Karol Marquez enters this weekend with 121 digs and a 6.05 dig per set average.
Presbyterian picked up a 3-0 win over Eastern Washington on Aug. 25 at the UniWyo Wyoming Invite, but the Blue Hose have been swept in each of their last five matches. Presbyterian's already faced an Atlantic Sun team when it hosted ETSU for its home-opener on Aug. 28. However, the Blue Hose have been a solid blocking team thus far in 2012 and already have 58.0 total blocks and 100 block assists on the season. Kerry Berryman leads five Presbyterian players with double-digits in blocks. Berryman has 30 total blocks (five solo and 25 assist) and averages 1.15 blocks per set.
The Radisson/North Florida Invitational is Davidson's second tournament of the 2012 season. The Wildcats went 3-1 during its season-opening week, picking up a mid-week win against Gardner-Webb on Aug. 28 and then went 2-1 at last weekend's Wake Forest Invitational. Both Caroline Brown and Ariel Ley earned Wake Forest Invitational All-Tournament honors. Brown posted double-doubles against both Wake Forest (14 kills, 13 digs) and UNC Wilmington (15 kills, 12 digs) and came one dig shy of a double-double against Winthrop (15 kills, nine digs). Meanwhile, Ley had 129 assists, including over 45 in two of the matches, and averaged 9.21 assists per set last weekend.
All Session tickets are available for purchase. Adults are $10 for all three sessions, Youth 17 and younger, Seniors 55+, UNF Faculty and Staff, and Active Military are $6.
