CHARLESTON, S.C. – University of North Florida volleyball plays its second tournament of the season this weekend when the Ospreys participate in the two-day Courtyard Charleston North Classic hosted by College of Charleston at TD Arena.
For the second-straight weekend, UNF opens a tournament against a host team, facing College of Charleston on Friday night at 7 p.m. The Ospreys then face Memphis at 10 a.m., on Saturday before concluding the tournament with an exhibition against the Slovenian Junior National Team at 4:30 p.m.
“The weekend will be another challenging weekend with some great competition,” said head coach Steve Loeswick. “Our team is excited and looking forward to another opportunity to get better.”
Of the three NCAA teams competing this weekend, UNF is the only one to have opened the 2012 campaign on the road. Both College of Charleston and Memphis hosted tournaments last weekend. UNF attempts to rebound from a 0-3 performance during last weekend's season-opening 2012 Tiger Invitational. Paige Pridgeon earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team after tallying 52 kills and averaging an Atlantic Sun-best 4.33 kills per set. Against No. 23 Michigan, Carolyn Jenkins came close to tying her single-match record for blocks. Jenkins posted seven total blocks, including two solo and five assist, coming up just one block shy of her match record of eight that was set against Texas A&M Corpus Christi at last year's College of Charleston Invitational.
“I was very pleased with the effort, togetherness and overall progress of our team last weekend,” said Loeswick. “We still have some things to work on but if the improvements continue at this rate, we'll have a very exciting season.”
College of Charleston went 2-1 during its own Hampton Inn & Suites West Ashley Invitational. UNF will be the second Atlantic Sun opponent to take on the Cougars this season. The College of Charleston defeated Jacksonville 3-2 during last weekend's tournament, fending off a Dolphin comeback. Darcy Dorton was tabbed the Southern Conference's Player of the Week after tallying 58 kills, 36 digs and two double-doubles and taking All-Tournament honors.
The series between UNF and the Cougars is tied a 1-1. College of Charleston won the first meeting in 2010 3-0, but UNF rallied for a five-set 3-2 win in 2011.
Memphis is also going to attempt to stop a skid of its own after dropping its first five matches of the season. The Tigers went 0-4 at its own tournament and then was swept by Arkansas State in a mid-week match. Additionally, Memphis has not won a set since taking the fourth set against Austin Peay in the season-opener. The Tigers' kills leader Altrese Hawkins already has two double-doubles on the season, recording 19 kills and 18 digs against Austin Peay and 12 kills and 10 digs against Eastern Michigan.
This is the first meeting between UNF and Memphis.
This weekend's tournament kicks off a Southeast tour for the Slovenia Junior National Team, who also plays exhibitions against No. 18 Florida, No. 8 Florida State and Georgia Tech next week. Slovenia finished seventh at the 2012 European Junior National Championships. Iza Mlakar was the team's top attacker at the 2012 European Junior National Championships.
