Complete Game Notes
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's soccer team will open its 2012 home schedule this weekend as it welcomes South Carolina State and Gardner-Webb to Hodges Stadium for matches on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
This past weekend, the Ospreys opened their season on the road, as they dropped a 2-0 decision at Furman on Friday evening before falling 2-0 at Clemson on Sunday afternoon.
For their home opener, the Ospreys will face a South Carolina State squad (Fri. Aug. 24, 6 p.m.) that has started 2012 at a quick offensive clip, racking up 10 goals and conceding none over the course of wins against Alabama A&M and Emmanuel. The Bulldogs have also spread out their scoring, with eight different players finding the back of the net. Freshman Rhea Anne Currie grabbed two goals and an assist over the weekend to earn her first career Great West Conference Offensive Player of the Week award.
The Ospreys have beaten South Carolina State both times the teams have squared off. After a 14-0 thumping in Jacksonville in 1999, UNF more recently took down the Bulldogs on their home turf in 2006 with a 5-0 victory.
The Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb (Sun. Aug. 26, 12:30 p.m.) come off a 6-8-5 season in 2011, including a 4-4-2 record in the Big South. Sophomore forward Megan Curan is the leading scorer returning from that squad, as she tallied five goals and four assists last year. Meagan Reynolds also returns, after scoring four goals for the Bulldogs in 2011. Gardner-Webb has only played once so far this season, dropping a 1-0 decision to Wofford last Friday, August 17.
UNF has never lost to Gardner-Webb and currently leads the all-time series 3-0-1. Most recently, the Ospreys downed the Bulldogs 2-1 on the road in 2007.
Both games will be broadcasted free of charge on ASun.tv and will have live stats available for viewing on UNFOspreys.com. Game updates will also be available via Twitter (@OspreyWSOC).
