COLUMBIA, Mo. – The 2012 University of North Florida volleyball campaign gets underway on Friday when the Ospreys open the season at the 2012 Tiger Invitational. UNF begins the tournament tomorrow against host Missouri at 1:30 p.m. EST. The Ospreys also face No. 23 Michigan (Friday, 5:30 p.m. EST) and Nicholls State (Saturday, 5:30 p.m. EST).
Missouri, Michigan and Nicholls State are all new teams to UNF's schedule as this is the Ospreys' first meetings with those teams. The three new teams will also kick off a new era for the indoor team as first-year head coach Steve Loeswick makes his indoor coaching debut tomorrow. Loeswick has already seen what the Ospreys can do after guiding them to the 2012 Atlantic Sun Sand Volleyball Championship in the spring.
There will be plenty of familiar faces on the court for the Ospreys as they return 11 players, including five seniors. Among those returning are last year's kills (Paige Pridgeon – 387), assists (Casey Giovanazzi – 1,0002), digs (Nicole Baran – 503), service ace (Baran – 23) and blocking (Carolyn Jenkins – 112) leaders. The Ospreys also add three newcomers in 2012 in sophomore transfer Cari Whitmire, redshirt freshman Madison Hatcher and freshman Kayla Fessler.
Like UNF last year, Missouri does not have a single senior on its roster this year. However, the Tigers received votes in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll and were picked to finish fourth in the SEC East. Much of the Tigers' offense returns from a year ago, including Lisa Henning, an AVCA Third-Team All-America selection that set a single-season school record for kills (523) last year.
Michigan enters the 2012 campaign ranked No. 23 in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll. The Wolverines boost a young roster with seven true freshmen and one redshirt freshman. Michigan only has one senior in Claire McElheny, who was third on the team last year in kills. Michigan lost its kills leader from a year ago to graduation, but in addition to McElheny, return Lexi Erwin, who was second on the team in kills.
Patrick Hiltz will make his coaching debut for Nicholls State at the 2012 Tiger Invitational. Nicholls State is another experienced team with six seniors. The Colonels return their top offensive player in Jennifer Brandt, who led the team with 306 kills and 39 service aces. Brandt finished 2011 ranked 95th nationally in aces per set. Defensively, Nicholls State graduated its digs leader (Rachel Yezak – 533) from a year ago, but get back Jennifer Dunn, who posted 432 digs in 94 sets in 2012.
