JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida volleyball team wrapped up its first spring practice period under new head coach Steve Loeswick recently capping it off with a home tri-scrimmage against rival Jacksonville and 2011 Final Four participant Florida State.
The Ospreys, who finished 2011 with a 14-17 mark, participated in match style competition versus both opponents.
“I would say it was a very successful weekend,” said Loeswick on his spring debut. “We accomplished more on the team development elements like playing together and being a great team then on the scoreboard. I was very pleased with their effort and attention to detail. We were able to carry the things we worked on in practice to the court in competition. Even though we will be transitioning to a focus on the sand season, we will continue to work on some indoor skills throughout the rest of the spring. I am very excited about their progress and am looking forward to a great indoor season this fall.”
Some of the strong performances from the weekend included Carolyn Jenkins with 23 kills and a .340 hitting percentage. Paige Pridgeon finished with 23 kills, while Julie Trembley chipped in 22 kills and Danija Medina added 18. Medina also posted a .295 hitting percentage followed by .241 for Trembley.
North Florida opens sand volleyball play with a dual match against Jacksonville on Mar. 9 on the JU campus. The Ospreys are also hosting a sand tournament Mar. 31-Apr. 1 at the Jacksonville Beach courts.
