JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida men's tennis captured the last singles match of the day in order to prevail 4-3 over Florida A&M on a windy Sunday at the UNF Tennis Complex.
Moritz Buerchner held off C. Salif Kante at No. 1 singles 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to give the Ospreys the match-winning point.
“Moritz and Danny (
Daniel Sotomarino) have been leaders for us all season,” said head coach Adam Schaechterle. “Today, they got the job done against two tough singles opponents as well as with their doubles partners to help us get this win.”
To begin the day, UNF took both No. 1 and No. 3 doubles in order to get the doubles point. Sotomarino and Nemcsek posted an 8-4 win over Kante and Levan Clark in the top spot. Buerchner and
Pedro Davisson had an 8-3 win over Fabrice Myrtil and Temuera Asafu-Adjave at No. 3 doubles. Florida A&M won at No. 2 doubles with Takura Happy and Chidi Gabriel defeating
Beauregard Treyz and
Julien Belair 8-6.
In singles, UNF and Florida A&M each won three matches. In addition to No. 1 singles, the Ospreys also took No. 2 and No. 5. Sotomarino cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Clark at No. 2, while
Leonardo Nahar won by retirement against Myrtil 6-0, 3-0, ret.
For the Rattlers, Happy defeated Nemcsek 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 singles and Gabriel had a 6-2, 6-4 win over Belair at No. 4 singles. Asafu-Adjave also defeated Edgar Graham 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
UNF is back in action on Saturday when the Ospreys host Troy at the UNF Tennis Complex at 10 a.m.
