JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Atlantic Sun Conference play begins for the University of North Florida women's basketball team on Monday afternoon when the Ospreys host Lipscomb in a basketball doubleheader at UNF Arena.
“Tomorrow is the start of our 18-game Atlantic Sun Conference schedule,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “Each game over the next two months is just as important as the next. There is a tremendous amount of parity in the Atlantic Sun with every team having the ability to win on any given day. Lipscomb is a young and talented team that we must defend very well.”
UNF returns to its home court for the third time this month and its first since hosting the Hampton Inn Oceanfront Holiday Classic just over two weeks ago. The Ospreys are currently 3-1 at home this season.
“It is great to be back at home and start conference play in front of our fans,” said Tappmeyer. “We've had nearly a two-week break in between games, but we played a really good game against Coastal Carolina before the holiday break. The girls are just beginning to realize their potential and hopefully we can carry that momentum with us into these conference games.”
The Ospreys wrapped up their nonconference schedule with a 69-58 win over Coastal Carolina during the Carolinas Challenge at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Dec. 19. UNF hit a Division I era, program single-game best 13 treys in the win over the Chanticleers and shot a blazing 59.1 percent from beyond the arc (13-for-22). Sophomore Destinee Smith and senior Jadhken Kerr powered the Ospreys' offense and combined for 34 points and 10-for-15 long range shooting. Smith was particularly hot from the floor, scoring a career-high tying 20 points and going 6-for-7 from three-point range. As a result, Smith earned her first-ever Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honor on Dec. 26.
UNF is an all-time 3-4 in Atlantic Sun openers. Last year, the Ospreys posted a 51-36 victory over cross-town rival Jacksonville at UNF Arena on Dec. 3, 2011. Prior to this season, UNF has only started A-Sun play against Lipscomb once and the Ospreys captured a 52-51 victory over the Lady Bisons on Dec. 4, 2008.
Lipscomb plays its first game since Dec. 21 and looks to snap a three-game losing skid. The Lady Bisons' only win of the season was a 67-54 triumph over Jacksonville State on Dec. 9 in Nashville. First-year head coach Greg Brown has a young team that only has two seniors and two juniors. Hannah Phillips enters Monday averaging 12.8 ppg, which ranks sixth in the Atlantic Sun, and 6.0 rpg.
UNF holds an 11-2 advantage in the all-time series, but the Lady Bisons won the last meeting 73-64 on Jan. 28, 2012 in Nashville. However, when the series is in Jacksonville, the Ospreys are 6-0 against Lipscomb.
Tip-off for the women's game is set for 2 p.m., with the UNF-Lipscomb men's game to follow.
