MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – University of North Florida women's basketball plays its final nonconference game of the season on Wednesday when the Ospreys take on Coastal Carolina in a neutral site game at the Myrtle Beach Convocation Center during in the Carolinas Challenge.
“It's a neutral site game and we'll have the away uniforms on, but it's a site that Coastal Carolina is familiar with and they will have fans there,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “It's an opportunity. When you go on the road, you have to be 10 points better than the home team. We have to be ready for 40 minutes of play because Coastal is a scrappy team.”
Put on by the City of Myrtle Beach, Carolinas Challenge features three college women's basketball games. UNF and Coastal Carolina play in the first game, No. 17 North Carolina and East Carolina are in the second game and Clemson-Providence wrap up the Carolinas Challenge.
UNF comes off a 1-1 showing at last weekend's Hampton Inn Oceanfront Holiday Classic. The Ospreys rallied against Jacksonville State to take a 52-45 win, but their comeback fell just short against UMES in a 54-52 loss. Ki Conner was tabbed All-Classic. Conner was instrumental in UNF's win against Jacksonville State, totaling 12 of her game-high 14 points in the second half.
Coastal Carolina plays its second game in 24 hours and its third in four days. The Chanticleers had back-to-back losses against North Carolina on Sunday and then South Carolina State on Tuesday night. It is the first time this season in which the Chanticleers had consecutive losses. However, Coastal Carolina is 5-1 on its home court this season, which is approximately 12 miles from the Myrtle Beach Convocation Center. Shatia Cole leads three players in averaging double-digits points with 11.7 ppg. Angelica Henry and AJ Jordan have 11.1 and 10.1 ppg averages. Katelyn Connor is pulling down a team-best 6.7 rpg.
UNF holds a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series with the Chanticleers. The Ospreys kept Coastal Carolina scoreless from three-point range in last season's 67-37 win at UNF Arena on Nov. 28, 2011.
Tip-off for tomorrow's game is set for 5 p.m.
