CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball faced a challenging No. 23 Miami team and fell 77-24 in the season-opener for both teams Friday night at the BankUnited Center.
“We did not respond well tonight,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “We were out-played and out-hustled. Miami was the superior team and we did not respond to the adversity. We have to learn to control what we can control. We will get back to work tomorrow so that we are ready for Sunday's game at FIU.”
Cold shooting plagued the Ospreys, particularly in the second half. UNF was 7-for-50 from the floor for the game.
Destinee Smith and Jada Bennett each scored a team-high five points, while Raneisha Lamar pulled down a game-best nine rebounds.
Miami shot 46.8 percent for the game, including 51.6 percent in the second half. The Hurricanes also held a 45-37 advantage in rebounds.
Michelle Woods led a trio of Hurricanes in double figures in scoring, tallying 19 points. Morgan Stroman and Shawnice Wilson added 17 and 10 points, respectively. Stroman also had a team-best eight rebounds.
It was low-scoring to start and Miami held a 10-point, 12-2 lead at 12:01 with half of its points being from the foul line. The Hurricanes pushed their lead to as many as 19 before Bre Crum started a 6-0 run for the Ospreys. Destinee Smith hit a three-pointer at 4:51 to cap the run and pull UNF to within 13 points of the Hurricanes (25-12). However, Miami closed out the half with an 11-0 run to take a 36-12 lead into the break.
In the second half, UNF had to contend with a hot-shooting Miami team, especially Woods, who tallied 17 her points during that half.
The Ospreys finish their season-opening weekend on Sunday at FIU. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
