DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's golf team is in seventh place after Friday's opening round play of the 2012 LPGA Xavier Invitational at the LPGA International Golf Course.
The Ospreys carded a first round 317 and are just seven strokes behind the leader in the 14-team field. Freshman Tess Huber and junior Kelly Miller posted matching rounds of 78 to pace the squad and are currently tied for 13th place in the medalist competition.
Freshman Mary Rodgers is tied for 23rd after her opening round 80 with freshmen Kelly Aylwin tied for 31st (81) and Julia McQuilken tied for 37th (82) rounding out the UNF lineup.
Florida Gulf Coast fired a first round 310 to move in front of the team standings with tournament host Xavier in second at 311. Old Dominion and Mercer are tied for third at 312 followed by Bethune-Cookman (315), Daytona State (316), North Florida, McNeese State (318), Stetson (320), Louisiana Monroe (324), UAB (329), South Dakota State (341), Northern Kentucky (347) and North Dakota (355).
XU's Shane Crutchfield posted an even-par 72 to claim the lead in medalist play.
The LPGA Xavier Invitational continues with second round action Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. The Ospreys will be paired with McNeese State and Stetson.
