DELAND, Fla. – Turnovers were a key factor on Monday afternoon as the University of North Florida women's basketball fell 63-55 at Stetson Monday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.
Jadhken Kerr led UNF with 17 points. Brittany Kirkland chipped in with 13 points. Larkira Jones grabbed a game-best 12 rebounds.
Stetson had four players in double-digits, including Victoria McGowan with a team-best 17. Sasha Sims added 13 and Cherisse Burris and Shanasa Sanders each had 10. Sanders also had a team-best six rebounds.
UNF shot 43.1 percent for the game (22-for-51), including 52.0 percent in the second half. The Ospreys (5-11, 2-3 Atlantic Sun) out-rebounded the Hatters 37-30.
Stetson was 37.9 percent from the floor, connecting on 22-of-58 shots. The Hatters registered 28 of their points off 28 UNF miscues.
After a close start to the first half, Stetson went up by seven with a Shanasa Sanders layup at 13:10 that made it a 13-6 game. Kim Baker hit a pair of free throws at 11:54 to pull UNF to within five, but the Hatters regained a seven-point cushion on a McGowan layup at 11:18.
UNF gradually erased the Hatters' advantage. A Fabiola Josil jumper at 9:49 sparked a 9-2 run that saw the Ospreys tie the game at 17-17 on a Jadhken Kerr trey at 4:33. Although Stetson went up by four, back-to-back Brittany Kirkland jumpers forced a 21-all tie with 1:50 left in the half. However, Sasha Sims' layup at 1:26 and made foul shot at 37 seconds sent Stetson into halftime with a 24-21 lead.
The second half started with a battle of runs. UNF opened the half with a 10-2 run. Three-pointers by Kerr bookend that run that gave the Ospreys at five-point 31-26 advantage at 16:15. However, Stetson answered with an 18-4 run over that allowed the Hatters to take a 44-35 lead with 9:48 to go. UNF came to within four on three occasions, including at 5:37 with a Brittany Kirkland jumper, but that was the closest the Ospreys could get.
UNF returns to its home court on Thursday night when the Ospreys host East Tennessee State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., from UNF Arena.
