FORT MYERS, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball hits the road for its first away Atlantic Sun games this weekend. The Ospreys open the road swing at conference leader Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Alico Arena.
UNF comes off a 77-67 win over Lipscomb on Wednesday night that allowed the Ospreys to move to 2-1 in the Atlantic Sun. The Ospreys made seven first-half treys, which helped UNF score 43 first half points. It was the first time this season in which UNF got up to 40 in a single half and the 17th time it has happened in UNF's Division I era. Brittany Kirkland (21 points), Jadhken Kerr (18) and Octavia Langston (10) all reached double-digits in scoring. UNF is now 3-2 on the season when three players score 10+ points in a single game. Meanwhile, Larkira Jones has 11 rebounds in each of UNF's three conference games. She is the only Atlantic Sun player averaging double-digits for rebounds in league games.
Ranked No. 4 in the CollegeInsider.com Women's Mid-Major Top 25 poll, Florida Gulf Coast returns to Alico Arena for the first time in nearly two weeks. The Eagles went 4-1 during a road trip that took them to the Hawai'I Rainbow Wahine Invitational Dec. 28-30, to Mercer on Jan. 2 and to Florida Gulf Coast on Jan. 4. Florida Gulf Coast's only loss during that stretch was to NC State by five point in Hawai'i. Three-pointers are a key factor in the Eagles' play as 48 percent of their made field goals and 55 percent of their field goal attempts are from long range. The Eagles lead the nation with 12.6 three-pointers per game and Eglah Griffin's 49.2 percent (32-for-65) from long range ranks fifth nationally. Sarah Hansen (13.6 ppg) leads a trip of Eagles that average double-digits in scoring.
Florida Gulf Coast leads the all-time series 6-2 and swept the series last year. UNF is winless at Alico Arena as both of the Ospreys' wins against the Eagles took place at UNF Arena.
