KENNESAW, Ga. – The University of North Florida women's basketball team begins its longest road stretch of the season on Thursday night when the Ospreys travel to Kennesaw State.
UNF takes to the road for the next four games with travels to Georgia (Kennesaw State and Mercer) and Tennessee (Belmont and Lipscomb). It is the first time this season in which the Ospreys will play more than two-consecutive away games.
The Ospreys, who are 3-4 in the Atlantic Sun, look to bounce back from a one-point setback to USC Upstate, who won in the game's final two seconds. It was UNF's second-straight game that came down to the final two seconds as the Ospreys clinched a 70-67 win over ETSU on Thursday night with a pair of free throws by Fabiola Josil. Taylor Smith was 4-for-5 from the field and 4-for-4 from the foul line against the Spartans to lead UNF with 12 points. Meanwhile, Larkira Jones had two blocks against the Spartans to eclipse the century mark for career blocks. Jones enters Thursday night's game against Kennesaw State with 101 career blocks and is just five blocks away from becoming UNF's all-time career leader in blocks. Shennette Sheffield currently sits atop UNF's record book with 105 blocks.
Kennesaw State is also 3-4 in the Atlantic Sun. The Owls return to KSU Convocation Center after a three-game road swing that saw them go 2-1. Kennesaw State comes off a 75-51 win at Mercer with Taylor Mills leading the way with 17 points, including 11 in the second half. However, the Owls have been winless in their last three home games, falling to Texas State (Dec. 19), Stetson (Jan. 2) and Florida Gulf Coast (Jan. 4). Mills, who was named A-Sun Newcomer of the Week on Tuesday, leads a quartet of Owls that average 10.0-or-more points.
The series with Kennesaw State is the most played in UNF history with Thursday night being the 30th game meeting. The first game of the series took place on Dec. 7, 1994 with UNF emerging with a 66-54 win. The Ospreys and the Owls have met every year since the 1997-98 season when both teams were part of the Peach Belt. UNF won the last meeting between the two teams, defeating Kennesaw State 66-57 at UNF Arena on Feb. 20, 2011. However, the Ospreys have not won at Kennesaw State since squeaking out a 75-73 overtime decision on Feb. 9, 2006. Kennesaw State leads the series, 17-12.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., from the KSU Convocation Center.
