FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's soccer team fell to Florida Gulf Coast by a score of 4-0 in both teams' Atlantic Sun Conference opener on Friday night.
It was the Ospreys' first loss on a Friday since Aug. 28, when they fell 3-1 to Western Carolina. FGCU came into the game sitting in 11th place in the NSCAA Southeast Regional Poll.
The scoring began early for the Eagles, as Shannen Wacker put the first goal past charging UNF goalkeeper Megan Dorsey in the 16th minute to put FGCU up 1-0. Gina Petracco then scored her first goal of the evening in the 33rd minute when she fielded a cross from Kayley Clay and buried a shot to double the Eagles' lead.
Petracco completed her brace by scoring again just 14 seconds before halftime when she volleyed a cross from Ashley Ciesielczyk into the right corner of the net to give FGCU a 3-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Osprey defense held firm until the 79th minute, when Amanda Goble completed the scoring by collecting a rebound and snuck a shot into the right corner of the net.
The Eagles defense peppered the UNF goal throughout the game, forcing eight saves out of Dorsey in just 73 minutes of play. Freshman Rachel Beninati came on for Dorsey in the 74th minute, but did not record a save. FGCU goalkeeper Stephanie Powers tallied five saves in the shutout.
Senior midfielder Denisse Soltero led the UNF offense on the evening with a pair of shots on goal.
The Ospreys are next in action Sunday afternoon when they travel to Stetson for a 2 p.m. Atlantic Sun contest.
