Women’s Tennis Advances to Semifinals

DeLAND, Fla. – No. 3 seeded University of North Florida defeated No. 6 seeded, crosstown rival Jacksonville, 4-1, in the first round of the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Tennis Championship Thursday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

The Ospreys (14-6) won two doubles matches to claim the first point of the contest and then captured singles wins at the No. 2, 3 and 4 positions to earn the victory.

At No. 3 doubles, UNF's team of Victoria Krook and Melinda Doak defeated Jacksonville's team of Virginia Iwinski and Veronique Spencer, 8-5. The Ospreys' also won at No. 2 doubles as the Second Team All-Conference doubles team of Danielle Day and Melanie Aguirre defeated the Dolphins' Flavia Nagayama and Natalia Melibeu, 8-5.

In singles play, Aguirre gave UNF a 2-0 lead in the match with a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Melibeu at No. 4 singles. The Ospreys also scored a victory at the No. 2 position as A-Sun First Team member Day defeated Gabriela Bartos 7-5, 6-2.

UNF received the clinching point at No. 3 singles with Krook's three-set battle against second team all-conference member Nagayama (6-3, 6-7, 6-3).

The Ospreys advance to Friday's semifinals and will play second-seeded Campbell at 11:30 a.m.
