JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's tennis team swept the doubles matches and claimed wins in five of six singles matches to pick-up a 6-1 win over Atlantic Sun Conference foe Mercer on Friday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex in Jacksonville, Fla.
The Ospreys (8-3) got off to a strong 1-0 start, picking up the early doubles point.
UNF's Aline Berkenbrock and Simona Weymar teamed up in the No. 1 to defeat Jennifer Lada and Aurelie de Montjou, 8-3. In the No. 2 doubles, Danielle Day and Melanie Aguirre paired up for an 8-5 win over the Bears' (2-10) Amalia Bugge and Lucie Payrat.
The Ospreys completed the sweep with a win in the No. 3 as Melinda Doak and Victoria Krook grabbed an 8-1 decision over Amanda Bertani and Sarah Hanna.
In singles matches, Berkenbrock defeated Lada in straight sets at the No. 1 with scores of 6-1, 6-0. Day had a straight set win over Bugge in the No. 2, 6-1, 6-0.
Krook held de Montjou scoreless in the No. 3, claiming a 6-0, 6-0 win over the Mercer player. In the No. 5 singles, Weymar defeated Bertani, 6-2, 6-2 while Doak picked up a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Hanna in the No. 6.
UNF's Aguirre battled in the No. 4 singles, taking Payrat to three sets. The Mercer player took the first set, 6-3, but Aguirre came back for a 7-5 win in the second set. In the tiebreak, Payrat held on for a 10-7 win, scoring the Bears' lone point.
The Ospreys will be back in action on Saturday, March 19 in a 10 a.m. contest against Kennesaw State at the UNF Tennis Complex.
