JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball returns to its homecourt at UNF Arena this weekend with the two-day Comfort Inn Holiday Classic. In addition to UNF, taking part in this year's Classic are Delaware State, FIU and Jacksonville State.
The Ospreys will face both Delaware State (Saturday ) and Jacksonville State (Sunday) during the weekend. It will be the first time UNF has played either team.
UNF was on the road for the last two games, falling both times, including Wednesday night's 63-52 loss at Florida Atlantic. Brittany Kirkland and Taylor Smith led the Ospreys with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Jasmine Hicks and Larkira Jones each swiped a career-high four balls and combined for just over half of UNF's season-best 15 steals.
Dating back to last season, the Ospreys have won 10 of their previous 11 home games, including their last two. UNF is an all-time 175-99 at UNF Arena and is currently 2-1 at home this season.
Idle throughout the week, Delaware State was last in action on Sunday when the Lady Hornets rallied for a 73-66 win against St. Francis. The victory snapped a seven-game losing streak for Delaware State. Tasia Bristow powered the Lady Hornets with 28 points, hitting four treys and going 10-for-11 from the free throw line. Bristow is one of the nation's top free throw shooters, ranking seventh nationally in the NCAA's latest statistics with a .938 free throw percentage behind 30-for-32 shooting. Delaware State will meet FIU on Sunday.
Jacksonville State begins the Comfort Inn Holiday Classic on Saturday against FIU before concluding it against UNF. Sunday's game will be the Gamecocks' third game in four days as they took on Jacksonville Thursday night. Despite 25 points and 12-for-17 shooting from Briana Morrow and a 15-point, 13-rebound performance by Danielle Vaughn, the Gamecocks fell to Jacksonville 87-74. Entering the weekend, a Jacksonville State player has scored 20+points in each of the Gamecocks' last two games. Additionally, Jacksonville State has seen players reach the 20-point plateau against both Lemoyne-Owen and Lipscomb. Sunday will be the Gamecocks' fourth game against an Atlantic Sun opponent and are currently 1-2 against A-Sun teams this season.
