COLUMBUS, Ohio - Hampered by 23 turnovers, the North Florida basketball team dropped an 85-50 decision Monday night against No. 3 Ohio State at Value City Arena.
UNF (1-4) battled throughout the game with OSU (4-0) but were unable to overcome the Buckeyes strength in the paint.
The Ospreys have now faced three nationally-ranked teams in their first five games of the season. No. 3 Ohio State is the highest ranked opponent for UNF during the three-year Matthew Driscoll era and the program's second Top 10 foe in the last week.
Parker Smith led a balanced offensive performance for the Ospreys scoring all of his 10 points in the second half. Jerron Granberry finished with eight followed by seven each for Travis Wallace, Jimmy Williams and Fred Landers.
All-American Jared Sullinger paced the Buckeye attack finishing with 27 points and 13 rebounds.
“Obviously, we know playing top level teams like Ohio State requires us to perform at a high level,” said Driscoll. “I thought we were resilient for most of the game but their length, size and depth allowed them to make separating runs. I thought we missed some shots that we have to make. We just need to keeping working hard and getting better as we head home for the next few games.”
UNF went toe-to-toe with the two-time defending Big Ten champions early in the first half holding a couple leads through the opening five minutes of play.
The Ospreys trailed by just three, 17-14, at the 10:35 mark, before OSU began to slowly build a lead. A 10-2 run from the eight minute mark to the four minute mark allowed Ohio State to seize the momentum taking a double-digit advantage.
The squads traded baskets for several possessions, but the Buckeyes closed with a 10-3 run over the final two minutes of the half for a 45-26 lead at the break.
The Buckeyes used an 11-2 run in the first four minutes of the second half to quiet a threat by the Ospreys. North Florida refused to go away answering with a 12-4 run to cut the margin to 60-40 with 10:53 remaining. The UNF surge brought the OSU starters back onto the floor.
OSU failed to score a field goal for a three-minute stretch but was able to maintain their lead by connecting on 8 of 10 free throws during the span. From there the Buckeyes settled into a flow eventually widening their lead to reach the final margin.
North Florida next begins a four-game home stand Wednesday against Wright State at 7 p.m. in UNF Arena.
