
Women's XC Takes Ninth at NCAA Regionals, Men Finish 19th

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The University of North Florida cross country teams wrapped up their 2011 schedules on Saturday morning at the NCAA South Regional in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The women's team took ninth place, while the men's team finished 19th.
In the women's 6k-meter race, junior Shelby Kittrell (21:34.6) led the way for the Ospreys, taking 29th out of the 191 runners. Junior Meggie Emons (21:48.5) followed closely in 37th, just ahead of senior Erin Nixon (21:56.7), who took 44th.
Junior Ecaterina Gheorghiu (22:15.3) was next in 65th place, and senior Kayla Conrad (23:41.1) wrapped up the scoring for UNF in 133rd. Senior Brooke Baumann (24:00.3) also took 147th for the Ospreys.
Florida State swept the women's race, taking home the team championship while junior Amanda Winslow earned medalist honors with a time of 20:33.4.
As a team, the Ospreys finished just a single point behind eighth-place Mississippi State, but 19 points ahead of 10th-place Belmont. UNF finished second-best of the five Atlantic Sun teams in attendance, beating Belmont, Mercer and Kennesaw State, while falling short of seventh-place Lipscomb.
In the men's 10k-meter competition, senior Cameron Dickerson (33:15.0) was the highest-finishing UNF competitor, grabbing 60th in the 159-runner field, followed by sophomore Chris Haynes (33:23.0) in 71st. Junior James Post (33:41.6) and sophomore Constantine Fotopoulos (33:41.6) finished almost simultaneously in 91st and 92nd, respectively.
Senior Mike Strasser (34:51.5) wrapped up the scoring for the Ospreys in 129th, while fellow senior Josh Brown (35:20.7) took 137th.
As a team, the Ospreys were just six points behind 18th-place Alabama, but beat 20th-place Vanderbilt by 50 points. FSU also swept the men's race, scoring 40 points to beat second-place Florida by 28, while junior David Forrester took home medalist honors with a time of 30:43.3.
