Men’s Soccer Concludes Season Against FGCU

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team ended the 2011 season at home against in-state and Atlantic Sun Conference foe Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday afternoon at Hodges Stadium. The Eagles offense scored four goals on the day for a 4-1 victory over the Ospreys.
North Florida registered eight shots, including four shots on goal in the match. Florida Gulf Coast took 12 shots with six on goal. The match was physical with the two teams combining for 34 total fouls and four yellow cards. FGCU had 21 fouls on the day compared to 13 by UNF. The Ospreys recorded three corner kicks on the day compared to zero by the Eagles. Florida Gulf Coast was charged with three offsides penalties compared to two by North Florida.
Offensively, the Ospreys were led by Teddy Mulamba. The freshman took only one shot, but made it count as he scored off of an assist from Enrique Haeussler. Casey Caronis led the team with three shots and a team-high two shots on goal. Mauricio Valderruten added a pair of shots. Pedro D'Avila and Haeussler each took a shot with D'Avila's shot coming on goal.
Freshman Federico Bertele recorded his 14th consecutive start at goal. The rookie registered a pair of saves between the goal posts on the afternoon.
Florida Gulf Coast was the first team to scratch the scoreboard, netting a goal in the fourth minute. The Eagles' Xavier Silva hit a low shot to the far post from 15 yards out off of a through ball from Francesco Distefano.
The Ospreys were able to keep the Eagles off of the scoreboard the remainder of the half and went into the locker room trailing 1-0. In the first half, FGCU took seven shots compared to just a pair by the Ospreys.
FGCU increased the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 56th minute. Cristian Raudales hit a low shot to the far right post off of a give-and-go from Distefano and Josey Portillo. At the 68th minute, the Eagles' Nick Patterson collected a rebound after Bertele recorded a save and put it in the back of the open net to push the lead to 3-0.
North Florida cut the deficit to 3-1 with a goal in the 76th minute. Haeussler dribbled up the left side and crossed the ball in front of the goal. Mulamba used a back heel kick at point blank range to record his first collegiate goal. The assist was Haeussler's first of the season.
The comeback fell short as FGCU's Patterson scored his second goal of the match in the 79th minute. He took a through ball from Jonathan Hohn and finished at the near post from 18 yards out.
North Florida concludes the season 1-15-0 overall and 0-8-0 in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
