JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – No. 70 ranked University of North Florida women's tennis team got the 2011 season off to a strong start, defeating Florida A&M, 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex.
The Ospreys (1-0) picked up the doubles point early, winning two of the three matches. Danielle Day and Melanie Aguirre teamed up at the No. 1, sweeping the FAMU pair of Kathline Durden and Maria Gomez, 8-0.
In the No. 2 match, Victoria Krook and Danielle Day paired up to defeat Shani Williams and Deke Olagbegi, 8-1.
The Ospreys claimed points in all six singles matches. Day downed Olagbegi, 6-0, 6-1 and No. 1 while Aguirre secured a 6-2, 2-6 (10) decision over Alexis Brown at No. 2.
At the No. 3 Krook dropped FAMU's Durden, 6-4, 6-1 and Weymar tallied a 6-2, 6-1 win over Bethany Holt at No. 4.
Newcomers to the UNF team, Melinda Doak and Alison Viana picked up wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Doak had a 6-7(5), 6-2 (11) decision over Gomez while Viana dropped Williams 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
The Ospreys will be back on the court, beginning a four game road swing on Saturday, Feb. 19 at Samford.
