
UNF Falls to No. 27 Wichita State

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of North Florida baseball team opened the 2010 South Alabama Classic with a 14-4 loss to No. 27 Wichita State on Friday, Feb. 26, at Stanky Field in Mobile, Ala.
The Ospreys (1-3) scored four runs on 12 hits, but were unable to control the bats of the Shockers (1-0), surrendering 14 runs on 18 hits.
Offensively, North Florida was led by senior David Eldredge, sophomore Andrew Karmeris and junior Michael Smith. The trio each collected two hits apiece on the afternoon with Karmeris scoring a pair of runs, while Smith and Eldredge scored the Ospreys other two runs. Karmeris, senior Justin Preckajlo and sophomore T.J. Gavlik each drove in a run. Karmeris finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of walks to his credit.
On the mound, the Ospreys used six pitchers on the day. Senior Michael Kelly (0-2) was credited with the loss. Kelly tossed 4.1 innings, surrendering seven runs – four earned runs – with a pair of walks and two strikeouts. After surrendering three unearned runs in the first inning, Kelly held the Shockers scoreless for the next three innings, before a costly fifth inning.
Wichita State was the first team to score, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Shockers plated three runs on three hits, a walk and an UNF error. Kelly struck out the first batter of the game, but walked the next. Back-to-back singles loaded the bases for WSU. With the base loaded and one out, a ground ball was hit to third base, but throw home to get the lead runner was off the mark allowing the first run of the inning score. A second fielder's choice left the Shockers with runners on the corner, but allowed another run to score. A third base hit of the inning plated the final run the first inning.
The Ospreys scored a run in the fourth inning to pull within two. With two outs, Karmeris walked to give UNF a base runner. Eldredge singled up the middle giving the Ospreys runners on first and second. Preckajlo followed with an RBI single to left field to score Karmeris and cut the Wichita State lead to 3-1.
The Shockers increased their lead in the top of the fifth inning. Wichita State scored six runs on five hits in an inning that featured a pair of pitching changes. Kelly retired the first batter of the inning but four consecutive base hits that included a double and a triple saw UNF going to the bullpen. Kyle Westwood entered the game in the fifth inning, but also struggled, surrendering a pair of runs on a hit and a walk. Freshman Josh Patton entered the game and was able to secure the final out of the inning, but not before the Ospreys found themselves on the wrong side of a 9-2 score.
Wichita State added two more runs in the top of the sixth on three hits. The Ospreys once again went to the bullpen as Tommy Organ entered the game to record the final two outs of the inning.
North Florida added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Karmeris led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield. Eldredge followed with a walk to give UNF a pair of base runners. With one out, Andrew Hannon reached base on a fielder's choice. On the play, the Shockers' third baseman mishandled the ball leaving the bases loaded for the Ospreys. Gavlik delivered an RBI single for the first run of the inning. UNF received a little help as the WSU pitcher balked in a run to close the gap to 11-3.
UNF cut the lead to 11-4 with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Smith led of the inning with a double to right center field. After a pair outs, Karmeris delivered an RBI double to score Smith.
Wichita State added a run in the top of the eighth inning one a solo home run. With two runners on and one out, senior Greg Koehler fanned the next two batters to escape the inning without any more runs.
WSU provided the final margin of victory with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning, claiming the 14-4 victory.
North Florida continues play in the South Alabama Classic on Saturday afternoon as they take on the tournament-host South Alabama Jaguars. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET) at Stanky Field.
