JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's basketball team defeated Stetson, 42-33, in Atlantic Sun Conference action on Thursday, Feb. 11 at UNF Arena.

The Ospreys improve to 8-16 overall and 5-10 in Atlantic Sun play, while Stetson falls to 5-20 and 5-11 in league play.

Freshman forward Jadhken Kerr scored nine points to lead the Ospreys. Senior forward Arlande Cherizol added eight points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Junior guard Juliemay Syquio grabbed a team-high 12 boards.

“I'm really glad about the win and I think that [Stetson] head coach [Lynn] Bria would agree that this is one of the ugliest games that we have both played all year,” said UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “I would like to think that we made each other play ugly, but we didn't take very good care of the basketball. I thought defensively we did some really good things, but offensively the pressure that they were putting on us should not have caused us to throw the ball away 30 times. That is just a recipe for disaster, but it's a win and we will take wins any way we can get them.”

Both teams got off to a slow start, but the Ospreys took an early lead, up 9-3, at the 14:34 mark. Stetson cut the lead to one (9-8) at 11:33, but UNF held on to the advantage and took its largest lead of the half, up nine, 21-12, with 3:18 left in the period. The Ospreys took a nine point lead, 23-14, into the intermission.

The Ospreys opened the second half with a 10-3 run to take a 16 point (33-17) lead with 13:31 left in the game. Stetson got the score back down to single digits and pulled to within seven four times in the final minutes of the half, but that is as close as the hatters would come as the Ospreys held on for the win.

North Florida shot 31.8 percent (14-44) from the field, while Stetson shot 17.6 percent (9-51). The Ospreys shot 29.4 percent (5-17) from behind the arc and 81.8 percent (9-11) from the free throw line. The Hatters shot 13.3 percent (2-15) from 3-point range and 72.2 percent (13-18) from the line. Tierra Brown led the Hatters with 16 points, while Natasha Graboski grabbed 12 rebounds.

The Ospreys will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 13, when they host Florida Gulf Coast at 4:30 p.m. in UNF Arena. If you are unable to attend the game it can be seen on ASun.tv.
