JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's soccer team will play host to the Osprey Classic this weekend, Aug. 28 and 30 at Hodges Stadium.
The Osprey Classic will feature Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, Jacksonville University and UNF. The Ospreys will face Georgia State on Friday Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. and Coastal Carolina on Sunday Aug. 30, at 2 p.m.
“I think they [Georgia State and Coastal Carolina] are both great teams,” said Head Coach Linda Hamilton. I think they are great out of conference competition for us and JU,”. “It will be fun in some ways to partner up with JU and battle against non-conference opponents.”
Friday night the Ospreys will take on Georgia State at 7 p.m. Last season the Ospreys made the trek to Atlanta Ga., and lost to the Panthers 3-1. Senior Katelin Swift was able to score her first goal of the season and senior Rachael Howard made eight saves.
“We're really excited, Georgia State is a tough team,” added Hamilton. “We played them last year and lost but this year we have some things to prove and it's an opportunity to have a second chance at them,” said Hamilton.
Georgia State lost its best player from last season in Kay Harbrueger who led the team with 18 goals, including two against the Ospreys. Last weekend the Panthers won their first regular season match, 4-2, against Moorhead State, with junior Apryl Goodwin scoring two goals.
With Georgia State traveling to Jacksonville, Fla. the Ospreys will look to keep their record alive with UNF not dropping a home non-conference match last season.
Coastal Carolina had a 13-7-1 overall record last season and finished first in the Big South's regular season and second in its conference tournament. Coastal Carolina will take the field this season without its top four players from last year in goals scored and assists. In addition they welcome 16 newcomers to the team.
UNF returns nine starters, including Atlantic Sun All-Conference Second Team Katelin Swift.
The Ospreys are 0-1 on the year after a 1-0 loss to FIT last Friday.
