UNF knocked off Mercer 6-1 Saturday
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Every singles match finished in straight sets on Saturday when the University of North Florida women's tennis team pushed past Mercer, 6-1, at the UNF Tennis Complex in Atlantic Sun Conference play for its ninth win in a row.
"Our intensity today was great, and the girls are all reaching a high level of play at the same time like I was hoping for this weekend," UNF head coach Rodrigo Puebla said. "The girls are really playing well and doing the things they need to do to win."
The Lady Ospreys (12-2, 6-0 A-Sun) grabbed an early lead by sweeping its sixth-straight doubles point while Mercer (2-10, 0-5) notched its only point at the No. 4 singles spot. Junior Raquel Castro blanked her opponent at the second spot for the first singles result just before senior Ina Durcakova finished her 6-1, 6-0 win.
"Ina stepped up today despite being sick," Puebla said. "She is a good player who knows how to deal with the different pressures and adversities."
UNF takes its final league road trip away from Jacksonville of the season next weekend, traveling to East Tennessee State and USC Upstate for an A-Sun top-three showdown.
"Next weekend is going to be very tough," Puebla said. "If we bring the same level of play that we have in our past few matches, we can definitely get the results we want."
