Ospreys over .500 for first time this season
KENNESAW, Ga. – After sitting idle on Saturday due to heavy rains, the University of North Florida women's tennis team came out and did what it had to do in a 5-2 win over Kennesaw State on Sunday.
The Ospreys improved to 11-10 overall with the win, marking the first time this season they are over .500. UNF also upped its record in the Atlantic Sun Conference to 8-2.
“It's good to be back on track with a winning record,” said assistant coach Rodrigo Puebla. “It was a tough weekend sitting around waiting for the courts to get dry. I was pleased with how they came out. They took care of business. We're looking forward to closing out our season on Wednesday against JU.”
UNF came out with intensity from the start when it captured the doubles point to put the pressure on the Owls. Juniors Natalia Sanchez and Carolina Melo teamed up in the No. 1 match to take down KSU's Agatha Palider and Lindsay Dillon, 8-4. Senior Vanessa Sanchez and junior Ina Durcakova were able to put away KSU's Caroline Page and Karen Ammann, 8-2, in the No. 2 doubles match.
The Ospreys continued their solidity in singles, picking up wins in Nos. 1-4. Natalia Sanchez blanked Palider in her No. 1 match, 6-0, 6-0. Vanessa Sanchez stifled KSU's Ayano Tanaka in No. 2 singles, winning the first set 6-2 and wrapping up the win after Tanaka retired in the second set with Sanchez winning 3-2.
Junior Maria Melihova won her second-straight No. 3 singles match when she posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Ammann. Durcakova was able to dismantle KSU's Allison Baulis in the No. 4 match by scores of 6-0, 6-1.
The Ospreys will wrap up their season at 2 p.m. on Wednesday against cross-town rival Jacksonville in the SunTrust River City Rumble. Not only will the Ospreys and Dolphins battle it out for a point in the race for the SunTrust Old Wooden Barrel, but they will also fight for sole possession of second place in the Atlantic Sun.
