Ospreys split doubleheader with Lipscomb

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.
– The University of North Florida baseball team mimicked weather on Saturday in its doubleheader split with Lipscomb at Harmon Stadium.

The day started off rough and turbulent, but in the end, the Ospreys were able to calm down and put it in cruise control. Sophomore Andrew Hannon had a standout performance, going 5-for-7 on the day with six RBIs, which included a three-run home run in game one. Hannon also scored three times.

After a tough 10-7 loss in the first game, UNF (6-4, 2-3 Atlantic Sun Conference) settled down and got to work at the plate from the start in game two. The Ospreys put together a five-run first inning in a rally that was fueled by a two-run single by senior T.J. Gaudy and a two-run double by senior Andy Warren.

UNF fed the inferno in the second inning with five more runs to take a 10-0 lead. Senior Mike P. Smith got it started with a triple over the center fielder's head that allowed sophomore Preston Hale and senior Chad Knight to score. Hannon drove in Smith on an RBI single through the right side of the infield, and Warren capped the scoring with another two-run double that allowed Hannon and Gaudy to score.

After the Bisons (4-5, 3-2) got on the scoreboard in the third inning with three runs, the Ospreys snatched back their 10 run with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Two of the runs in the inning were driven in by walks, while the other was driven in as the result of Hannon being hit by a pitch.

Sophomore starting LHP John Atteo (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after pitching a solid 6.0 innings. Atteo allowed four earned runs on eight hits while striking out six in his longest outing of the season.

Junior RHP John Raiford picked up his first career save after pitching an effective 3.0 innings to close out the game. Raiford allowed just one hit and struck out five.

UNF had to battle winds of up to 50 miles per hour in the first game and had trouble adjusting in the beginning. Junior starting RHP Ty Pryor (1-2) had a tough time finding the strike zone and allowed five runs before lasting just a third of an inning. Junior RHP Antonio Franzese tossed a career-high 8.1 innings of relief and was able to keep the Ospreys in the game as they tried to creep back into it.

Down 6-0 in the bottom of the third, UNF answered back with four runs. Smith's sacrifice fly allowed Knight to cross the plate for the inning's first run. In the next at-bat, Hannon launched a towering three-run blast over the left field wall.

The Bisons later went up 8-5, but the Ospreys nipped at the lead against and added two runs in the bottom of the eighth on clutch RBI singles from Hale and senior Travis Martin.

But UNF wasn't able to hold the momentum in the top of the ninth. Lipscomb added two more runs, which was just enough to hold off the furious Osprey comeback.

Both Warren and Smith finished the day with four RBIs. Knight and Hale each scored four runs.

UNF will conclude its series with Lipscomb at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Harmon Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on WBOB-AM 1320 in Jacksonville and will also be carried on ASUN.TV. Live stats will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
