JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team used some late inning magic to take down Lipscomb 9-7 on Sunday at Harmon Stadium and win the Atlantic Sun Conference series two games to one. It was UNF's first A-Sun series win of the season.
With chances running out and the outlook seeming bleak, UNF (7-4, 3-3 A-Sun) pulled together for a five-run seventh inning to overcome a 7-4 deficit. The Ospreys took advantage of wild pitching and costly errors by the Bisons to get the rally going.
After an RBI single by sophomore Andrew Hannon drove in freshman Sam Perry to tie the game, senior T.J. Gaudy notched the game-winning RBI when his rocket shot to first base wasn't handled cleanly, which allowed him to beat it out and freshman Michael R. Smith to score. Smith reached third on the previous play when a bobble by Lipscomb's right fielder allowed him to swipe an extra base.
Lipscomb (4-6, 3-3) put UNF in a hole early, scoring four runs in the top of the first and adding another in the second. The Bisons were able to knock out starting UNF RHP Jonathan Turner, who lasted just 1.1 innings and allowed five runs on six hits.
Sophomore Tucker Pryor put a stop to the swelling and helped keep the Ospreys within striking distance of the Bisons. Pryor lasted 5.0 innings in relief and allowed one earned run on four hits while striking out three. He also picked off a runner in the fourth inning.
The Ospreys chipped away at Lipscomb's 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third when sophomore T.J. Thompson hit a towering fly ball over the Lipscomb center fielder's head to give him a bases-clearing two-run triple.
Senior Travis Martin led off the bottom of the fourth with a double down the left field line and later scored on a failed pickoff attempt by Lipscomb's Michael Dunn. Hannon scored the second run in the inning when Gaudy reached on an error by the shortstop.
Junior RHP Tyler Stohr picked up his first win as an Osprey when he pitched the final 2.2 innings and struck out six while allowing just one hit. Lipscomb's Josh Smith picked up the loss after failing to get an out in the seventh innings and allowing three runs.
Thompson finished the day with three RBIs, while Gaudy went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.
UNF will return to action at 6 p.m. on Monday when it heads south to Daytona Beach, Fla., to take on Bethune-Cookman in a non-conference game. Audio and live stats will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
