BOX SCORE
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Jan. 3, 2007) - Casey Wohlleb scored 22 points and Adam Liddell added 18 points to lead Florida Gulf Coast past host North Florida 70-67 in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both teams on Thursday night at UNF Arena.
FGCU (5-9, 1-0 A-Sun), which is in its first season of Division I competition, was playing in its first conference game in school history, while UNF (1-12, 0-1 A-Sun) is in its third season of Division I membership.
In a game that featured nine lead changes and four ties, the teams battled back and forth for much of the final 20 minutes before the Eagles eventually stretched out to a seven-point lead. UNF had a chance to tie in the final seconds on a 3-pointer try by Tom Hammonds, but the shot rimmed out and the Eagles grabbed the rebound as time expired.
The Eagles shot 50 percent for the game and 61 percent in the second half, while UNF shot just 40 percent for the game and only 37 percent over the final 20 minutes. UNF won the rebounding battle, 39-31.
"You want your best players with a chance to tie or win the game late, and that is what we had," UNF head coach Matt Kilcullen said. "Tom (Hammonds)had a couple of good looks at the basket in the last two minutes, and the shots just didn't fall. We gave ourselves a chance to win, and we liked the shots we had. Our guys played hard. We just didn't execute at key points in the game, and it cost us."
With the game tied at 59, FGCU outscored the Ospreys 7-0 over a two-minute stretch to work out to a 66-59 with 2:18 remaining. UNF battled back to within 67-65 with 23 seconds remaining and trailed just 69- 67 after a pair of Cortez Riley free throws with eight seconds to go.
Wohlleb hit the second of two free throws with seven seconds left, however, and UNF had one final shot. Hammonds' jumper from the top of the key failed to connect, however.
Hammonds led UNF with 14 points, while Justin Cecil, Riley and DeVon Jones each added 11 points. Senior James Grimball tallied nine points and 15 rebounds, falling a point shy of his 12th career double- double.
UNF returns to action on Saturday when it plays host to A-Sun foe Stetson at UNF Arena. The men's- women's doubleheader begins at 2 p.m., with the men's game set to tip at 4:15. The game will be aired locally on WBOB-AM 1320 and videostreamed on the web by ASUN.TV.
