JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's volleyball team battled strong on Saturday in the day's first match of the UNF Labor Classic but wasn't able to keep the momentum alive in a 30-26, 30-24, 30-26 loss to Texas-San Antonio at UNF Arena.
UNF (0-5) was led in kills by senior Amy Stroder, who notched 10. Junior Kavie Sturch tied her season-highs with nine kills and 15 digs. The Lady Ospreys were led on defense by senior Maegan Weisert, who recorded a career-high 25 digs.
The Lady Ospreys quickly assumed control in the first game, taking a 10-4 lead on a run that was highlighted by two Sturch kills. But the Roadrunners (2-4) reversed their fortunes and tied the score at 12 when they were able to score six straight points. With the game knotted at 14, UTSA went on a 9-2 run that effectively put the game away.
The teams traded blows in the second game and leads changed several times in the early going until the Roadrunners created a separation and took a 15-11 lead. Later in the game, UTSA extended its lead to 26-18. With the score 26-19 in favor of the Roadrunners, junior Bary Rasmussen gave the Lady Ospreys hope when she laid down two consecutive service aces. But UNF couldn't keep the consistency going down the stretch and allowed UTSA to take a 2-0 lead.
Kaley Read's kill on the third point of the third game gave the Lady Ospreys a 2-1 lead, which was their only advantage of the game. UTSA went on to score the next six points to take an insurmountable lead. UNF didn't show any signs of giving in, however. With the score 19-28 in favor of UTSA, UNF went on to score six straight points to cut the lead to 28-25. UNF scored another point to cut it closer, but UTSA's Cristina Almeida was able to kill off the final point and wrap up the match.
Freshman Madeline Belvin led UNF with 19 assists while senior Claire Yonutas chipped in with 12 assists. Rasmussen tied her career-high with three service aces.
UTSA was led by Almeida and Victoria Prior, who had 10 kills each. Rebecca Hrapmann had a match-high 33 assists.
The Lady Ospreys will wrap up the Labor Day Classic with a 7 p.m. match against Weber State. UTSA will take on Southeast Missouri State at 4 p.m.
