JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida could not keep up with the towering size of Weber State and dropped a 30-22, 30-18, 30-12, decision in the final match of the 12th Annual UNF Labor Day Classic.
UNF (0-6) hit .045 for the match against a Wildcat squad that had eight players at least 6-feet tall. Junior Kavie Sturch led the Lady Ospreys with eight kills and six digs. Freshman Madeline Belvin notched 11 assists.
"Weber is a strong, consistent team," said head coach Kevin Campbell. "We played well in spurts tonight. I'm very encouraged for our development and growth as we form together as a team."
The Lady Ospreys put the pressure on Weber in the early going of the first game and jumped out to a 3-2 lead. Things stayed tight until the Wildcats went on an 8-2 run to take a 20-13 lead. But when it seemed like Weber had the game decided with a comfortable lead, the Lady Ospreys were able to score six straight points with Sturch serving and pull to within 23-21. But the Wildcats snatched back the momentum and went on a 7-1 run for the game one win.
UNF took a 5-3 lead early in the second game, but two attack errors by Sturch and Kaley Read allowed Weber to go on to take a 7-5 lead. The Wildcats went on an 8-2 run to take a commanding lead and didn't let up the rest of the way to take a 2-0 lead. UNF hit .083 for the game compared to Weber's mark of .440.
Weber (3-1) took control in the early going of the third game and didn't give an inch to a hard-fighting UNF squad. The Wildcats held the Lady Ospreys to a -.094 hitting percentage, and UNF connected on just three kills in the game.
Junior Bary Rasmussen led the Lady Ospreys in hitting percentage with a .417 mark, which included six kills. She also tallied two blocks.
The Lady Ospreys will continue their tournament trek and head to Orlando, Fla., on Thursday for the UCF Invitational. UNF is set to take on UCF at 1 p.m.
