JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The
University of North Florida softball team swept a
doubleheader from Georgia Southern on Tuesday, not
allowing a run in 14 innings of action.
UNF's Katie Brosky threw a two-hitter in the opener,
not allowing a hit until the seventh inning in a 4-0 win.
Not to be outdone, Lady Osprey freshman lefty Devyn Findley did not allow a run and surrendered five hits in
a 1-0 victory in the nightcap. The pair of shutouts
upped UNF's record to 10-10, while Georgia Southern
fell to 10-12.
The two hurlers combined for 15 strikeouts, while only
walking four. While Brosky and Findley provided the
pitching, Christina Evans, Lauren Pulling and
Elizabeth Howell gave UNF the offense it needed,
each collecting a pair of hits in the doubleheader.
Howell capped the scoring in the opener with a
towering two-run home run to left field that gave the
Lady Ospreys a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third. The
home run was her first at UNF.
"That might have been the highest ball I have ever
seen hit at this park," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth
said. "Elizabeth is a good hitter. It's just a matter of her
getting into a groove and hitting balls hard."
Howell finished the opener 2-for-3, while Pulling was
1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.
Brosky (5-5) did not surrender a hit until Robyne Siliga
and Maria Laurato reached on back-to-back hits in the
seventh inning with one out. Brosky left them
stranded, however, to earn her second shutout in her
last three outings. She has not allowed an earned run
in her last three games.
Findley (4-1) was equally as effective in the second
game, not allowing a runner past second, while
striking out seven Eagles.
Pulling provided Findley the offense she needed,
driving home Gwen Williams with an RBI single to left
in the bottom of the fourth that came with two outs.
"We needed some clutch hitting," Wilmoth said. "It
wasn't pretty, but it worked."
Logan Free (5-4) was the tough-luck loser for Georgia
Southern, allowing only two hits in six innings of work,
while striking out five and giving up three walks.
Pulling and Evans were the only Lady Ospreys to
reach on a base hit in game two.
Laurato had a hit for Georgia Southern in both games,
finishing a combined 2-for-5 at the plate.
A.J. Street (1-4) took the loss in the opener for the
Eagles.
UNF is back in tournament action this weekend when
it travels to DeLand for a tournament hosted by
Stetson. Play begins on Friday when the Lady Ospreys
take on Bethune-Cookman and Temple.
