JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - University of
North Florida pitcher Devyn Findley came through with
the game-winning RBI on both ends of a
doubleheader against Ball State at the UNF Softball
Complex, while also earning a save and a win in the
pitching circle.
UNF (17-12) took the opening game 3-1 before
coming from behind against the Cardinals (6-11) to
capture the second game 6-2.
Findley was a combined 3-for-5 at the plate in the
doubleheader with three RBIs and a run. Elizabeth Howell continued her torrid pace as well, extending
her hitting streak to nine, while hitting her third home
run of the season.
"Devyn Findley had a great game today," UNF head
coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "She proved she is a good
hitter in the clutch and deserves to be in the lineup.
She has no fear and that's what I love about her."
Findley broke open a 1-1 tie in the first game, lining a
single off the outstretched glove of Cardinals' third
baseman Taylor Yancey. The base hit brought home
Howell, who reached on a double to lead off the
inning.
Howell and Findley each had a pair of hits for UNF,
with Howell starting the scoring in the first inning with
a solo home run to left.
"Elizabeth hits well at home," Wilmoth said. "She is
hot right now."
Findley took over for starter Tori Ahern (4-4) in the top
of the sixth inning and mowed through the Ball State
lineup, only allowing a walk, while striking out four of
the seven batters she faced to earn her second save
of the season.
Ball State grabbed its only lead of the day when it
scored a pair of unearned runs off of Katie Brosky in
the top of the fourth of the nightcap to go up 2-1. UNF
countered with a run in the bottom of the inning when
Ashley Parenteau's squeeze bunt scored Heather Hyde.
With the score tied 2-2, Findley delivered again with a
base hit to left that drove home Christina Evans. The
Lady Ospreys took advantage of two Ball State errors
in the inning to score four runs and seal the win for
Findley (7-1). The UNF lefty replaced Brosky in the top
of the fifth inning and did not allow a hit in her 2.2
innings of work, striking out three and walking one.
Gwen Williams led UNF at the plate with a 2-for-2
performance that included an RBI, while Parenteau
drove home a pair of runs for the Lady Ospreys.
Amber Wolf collected two hits for the Cardinals, while
Abby Gross was 2-for-2 in the opener.
UNF opens conference play this weekend when it
hosts Campbell on Saturday for a doubleheader
beginning at 1 p.m.
