DELAND, Fla. - University of North Florida freshman pitcher Devyn Findley threw her first career no-hitter and benefited from an offense that exploded for 12 runs on 15 hits in a 12-0 win against Mount St. Mary's Saturday on day two of play at Stetson's tournament.
UNF (12-12) finished the day 1-1, falling to Stetson later in the evening.
"It was nice to see us swing the bats the way we did today," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "Everyone hit, even those we were able to get in off the bench, and on top of that they hit the ball hard. As for Devyn, she stayed in good counts and was able to keep them off-balance."
Findley (5-1) threw five innings of no-hit work for her second shutout of the week. She allowed only one runner to reach scoring position, while walking three and striking out two.
"I didn't really think about throwing a no-hitter," Findley said. "I felt I was working both sides of the plate well with my curveball and screwball. The offense gave me a lot of confidence as well."
Seven of UNF's nine starters in the lineup collected a hit. Gwen Williams led the way with a 2-for-3 performance that included three RBIs.
She got the Lady Ospreys (12-11) on the board in the top of the first inning with an RBI single that scored Kelli Rutenbar. That inning was only a prelude to a five-run performance in the second inning that saw UNF send 11 hitters to the plate and score four runs before The Mount was able to record an out. Ashley Parenteau reached base twice in the inning, while Mallory Butler brought home two with an RBI double. Williams singled to left to bring home two runs and complete the scoring.
Parenteau and Butler were each 2-for-2 at the plate. Lauren Pulling was 2-for-4 with a double to go along with an RBI and a run.
UNF scored three more in the third before Teryn Murray, Parenteau and Pulling each drove home a run in the fifth to complete the scoring. Murray and Joanna Kurycki each singled in their first at-bat as a Lady Osprey.
Kurycki (0-1) traded the batter's box for a spot in the pitching circle against Stetson, dueling the Hatters' Erica Demers (6-0) in a 2-1 ball game.
Stetson scored runs in the second and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Lady Ospreys struck back in the bottom of the fifth when Howell reached with a two-out single before coming around to score on a Heather Hyde double to right center.
UNF threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh after Kelli Rutenbar led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on an Evans bunt. Howell followed that with a line drive that looked headed to right field, but was snared by Lindsay Lightman who made a leaping grab then ended the game by doubling Rutenbar off second base.
Howell and Evans each had two hits for UNF, which had eight total on the evening. The Lady Ospreys, however, left eight runners on base, five of which were in scoring position.
Kuycki allowed eight hits in seven innings of work for UNF, striking out four and only allowing one walk.
UNF closes out tournament action for the 2007 season on Sunday with a rematch against Mount St. Mary's at 9 a.m.
