DELAND, Fla. - The
University of North Florida softball team scored six
runs in the opening inning to cruise to a 9-1 win
Sunday against Mount St. Mary's on the final day of
play at Stetson's tournament.
UNF (13-12) finished the event with a 3-2 mark and
ends tournament play 11-9 overall this season.
UNF picked up on Sunday where it left off Saturday
against Mount St. Mary's. The Lady Ospreys pounded
out 15 hits and scored 12 runs in the first meeting
between the teams, before collecting 10 hits on
Sunday, five of which were extra base hits.
Elizabeth Howell led UNF with a 3-for-4 day at the
plate, while Gwen Williams drove in three runs. She
and Kelli Rutenbar each had a pair of hits for the Lady
Ospreys.
UNF's first eight batters of the game reached base
with the first five reaching on a hit.
The Lady Ospreys scored six runs in the opening
frame on six hits and a pair of walks. Christina Evans
got the scoring started with a two-run home run to left.
Williams followed with a double two batters later to
drive in the third run of the game. UNF loaded the
bases from there and added to the advantage when
Devyn Findley drew a bases-loaded walk. Mallory Butler finally completed the scoring with a single to left
that plated two runs.
UNF made it a 7-0 advantage in the bottom of the third
when Elizabeth Howell drove home a run with a
double to left center.
Williams finally ended the scoring - and the game -
with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh
that hit the light pole in left-center. The home run was
her first of the season and gave Williams six RBIs in
the three-day tournament. As a team, UNF hit .362 in
the event, while outscoring its opponents 29-10.
Evans and Parenteau led the way at the plate, each
hitting .462.
UNF's offensive output was more than enough for
right hander Tori Ahern (3-4) on Sunday. The junior
recorded her second win of the tournament, allowing
only four hits in six innings of work, while striking out a
season high eight batters.
Mount St. Mary's only run of the game was unearned
and came in the top of the sixth when Kelli Seger
reached on a fielder's choice and drove home Lisa
Curreri from third on the play.
The Lady Ospreys return home next week, hosting
Maine on Wednesday before Ball State comes to town
on Thursday. UNF begins conference play at home
Saturday against Campbell.
