GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida softball team dropped a pair of games at 20th-ranked Florida on Wednesday, falling 5-0 and 1-0.
After a couple of rough innings in the opener, UNF (6-6) settled down behind the pitching of Devyn Findley and Katie Brosky, only allowing one run over the final 10 innings of play.
"Katie and Devyn pitched great, we just fell victim to one bad pitch in the second game," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "We showed that we could compete with them, we just didn't drive in runs when we had the opportunities."
Brosky (3-2) allowed a home run in the opening inning of game two to Melissa Zick, but didn't allow another run the rest of the contest, surrendering only four hits. The Lady Ospreys put runners in scoring position in the third and fourth with less than two outs, and a put a runner on second with two outs in the seventh, but couldn't come up with a clutch hit.
Stacey Stevens (5-2) earned the win in both games for Florida (12-3).
Kara Rutenbar collected two hits in the second game, including a bunt single. Kelli Rutenbar, Gwen Williams and Ashley Parenteau each had a hit in the opener.
Tori Ahern (1-3) suffered the loss in game one, giving up four earned runs in a little over an inning of work. Findley came on from there to allow one earned run over the final five innings. The lefty from Gainesville struck out three and walked two in front of a large contingent of hometown fans.
UNF is back in action next week when it takes on UCF in a single game next Tuesday in Orlando.
