CHARLESTON, S.C. - For the second- straight week the University of North Florida softball team secured a third-place finish in tournament play with a victory on the final day of the event.
UNF's 3-2 win against James Madison on Sunday gave the Lady Ospreys a 3-2 record at the Cougar Classic and a third-place finish in the five-team tournament.
"We played well today," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "Our defense and pitching got better as the tournament went along. We kept plugging away and that's what we needed to do heading into a doubleheader with Florida."
The Lady Ospreys (6-4) prepared for Wednesday's doubleheader at Florida by taking advantage of two James Madison errors in the top of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Elizabeth Howell was credited with the game-winning RBI, reaching on an error that brought home Gwen Williams with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth.
That was enough for the pitching duo of Devyn Findley and Katie Broskie, which held JMU at bay most of the day. Findley (2-1) earned the win, giving up an unearned run in the second before surrendering a home run in the fourth that tied the game 2-2.
Broskie came on in the bottom of the sixth to pitch 1.1 innings of hitless relief and earn her first save of the year.
UNF jumped on the board in the top of the first when Ashley Parenteau slugged the first pitch she saw to left-center for her first home run of the year. Howell made it a 2-1 ballgame in the top of the fourth, singling home Williams with a base hit to left.
Heather Hyde finished the day 1-for-2 at the plate, and along with Christina Evans was named to the Cougar Classic All-Tournament Team.
