JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University
of North Florida women's basketball team kept pace
with East Tennessee State for 40 minutes of play on
Saturday but came up just short in a 61-58 loss at
UNF Arena.
UNF (6-19, 5-9 A-Sun) went through a six-minute
drought without a field goal to open the second half,
then went through another four-minute drought later in
the half. The win gave ETSU (15-10, 11-4 A-Sun) a
season sweep of the Lady Ospreys and gave UNF its
fifth loss in a row.
After falling down by as many as 11 in the final six
minutes of play, UNF mounted a rally that eventually
gave them a chance to tie the game at the buzzer.
Trailing 61-56, UNF's Cecilia Woolfolk hit a layup with
one second to play and drew a foul on the play as
well. After missing the ensuing free throw on purpose,
Denisia Andrews grabbed the rebound for UNF,
passing it to Jennifer Bowen who just missed a 3-
pointer that would have sent the game into overtime.
Woolfolk led the Lady Ospreys with a season high 17
points, while Bowen followed her with 15, sinking all
eight of her free throw attempts.
Jenny Norman was the only Lady Buc in double
figures, finishing the contest with 12 points.
The two teams played even in almost every statistical
category. Each team hit 19 shots, with UNF taking only
one shot more from the field than the Lady Bucs.
ETSU had 37 rebounds on the day, 15 of which came
on the offensive end, while UNF finished the game
with 35 boards, 16 on the offensive end. UNF turned
the ball over 25 times, compared t0 24 ETSU
turnovers, while both teams had 13 assists. UNF had
five blocks compared to four on the Lady Bucs' side of
the stat sheet.
The final difference came at the free throw line where
ETSU hit 20-of-29 from the charity stripe, compared to
UNF, which hit 16-of-22.
The two teams played each other tight in the first half
with neither squad leading by more than six points.
Bowen hit a 3-pointer at the 10:12 mark of the half to
trigger a 14-7 run that gave UNF a 25-24 lead at the
break.
UNF only allowed eight points over the first seven
minutes of the second half, but couldn't kick its
offense into gear, scoring only four points in that span.
ETSU eventually expanded on its lead thanks to its
back court press that kept the pressure on UNF. Jenny
Norman's 3-point play gave the Lady Bucs a 48-37
advantage before Bowen finally triggered a 15-10 UNF
run with a pair of free throws at the 3:45 mark. That run
was almost enough for the Lady Ospreys to force
overtime.
Shandrea Moore led UNF with six rebounds, tying
ETSU's Michele DeVault for a game high.
UNF heads back on the road next week when it travels
to Stetson on Thursday before paying Mercer a visit on
Saturday.
