
Stetson tops Lady Ospreys

DELAND, Fla. - Stetson University shot 51 percent from the field and took advantage pair of big runs to capture a 72-50 win against the University of North Florida Thursday at the Edmunds Center.
Stetson (5-21, 5-10 A-Sun) went on a 15-0 run in the opening half before starting the second half on a 9-0 run to stop its seven-game losing streak. The loss was the sixth in a row for UNF (6-20, 5-10 A-Sun).
Jennifer Bowen hit four shots beyond the 3-point arc in the first half, but struggled after that. She led the Lady Ospreys with 12 points, all of those coming in the opening frame. Shaina Strozier followed her with nine points, seven of which came at the free throw line. Four Lady Hatters reached double-digit point totals, led by Janene Maclin and Vlendy Roldan, who each scored 14.
Stetson came out of the gates hot, hitting six of its first eight shots to take a 14-5 advantage five minutes into the contest.
Bowen kept the Lady Ospreys in it, hitting four shots beyond the arc in the first seven minutes of play. She scored 12 of the team's first 16 points.
Stetson went on a 15-0 run from there to take a 33-16 advantage. The Hatters shot 63 percent from the floor in the opening half, compared to UNF which shot 26 percent. Janene Maclin led the Hatters with 10 points, while Prue Kenny scored eight. UNF hit all six of its free throws, with Cecelia Woolfolk hitting four of them before leaving the game with an injury.
UNF went on a four-minute scoring drought to open the second half play, missing its first four shots before head coach Mary Tappmeyer pulled all of her starters. Willonda Windham finally broke that drought with a baseline jumper to make it a 49-28 contest.
UNF's group of subs helped spark a 12-3 run, that Stetson finally countered with an 8-0 run of its own, wearing down the group that entered the game.
Stetson won the battle of the boards 42-32, as Rolden and prue Kenny led all players with six rebounds. Jennifer Guldager pulled down five rebounds to lead UNF. Stetson committed 14 turnovers compared to 11 for the Lady Ospreys.
UNF will finish up the road portion of its schedule this Saturday when it travels to Mercer for a 2 p.m. tip.
